Services - Tyres
People think if the centre of the tyre is worn and the outer edge still has 1.6mm
of tread this is classed as being acceptable. The legal limit for minimum depth
of the tread on your tyres is 1.6mm, this is across the central ¾ of the tread around
the complete circumference of the tyre. If you are caught with insufficient tread
on your tyres you could find yourself getting 3 penalty points and fines up to £2000.
UK laws states that all vehicles are fitted with the correct type and size tyre,
this means fitting your vehicle with the right tyres and inflating them to manufacturers
recommended pressures.
Most manufacturers recommend replacing the tyres when they measure 3mm, this is
to ensure safety of your own behalf and others travel with you or around you. The
stopping distance in wet conditions at 50 mph with 1.6mm tread would be over two
car lengths, where as with 3mm the distance would decrease dramatically.
There are different treads on tyres, cross ply tread which runs across the tyre
and radial tread which runs circular around the tyre. This choice of different treads
should not be mixed on the same axle front or rear. Matching treads are always required.
Mixing brands and patterns on tyres is legal but we always advise you to check your
manufacturers recommendations on what tyre pattern and brand tyre they suggest for
replacement.
